Track Name: Night After Night
this world ain't a place for dreams
not for people like you and me

i go downtown on a weeknight
i comb my hair, i wear something tight
couple drinks and i feel alright
though i'd rather be home
i picture you and you're far away
the pressure mounts and the edges fray
some things we do for love
some things we do for pay

night after night it's the same routine
life never quite looks the way you dream
i never became who i wanted to be
this city's no good for a girl like me

i write a poem on my lunch break
it's something small but that's all it takes
i fold it up and i throw it away
it's for me alone
i picture you, it comes easily
it's something small, it's a luxury
we'll take a day
eventually

night after night it's the same routine
life never quite looks the way you dream
i never became who i wanted to be
this city's no good for a girl like me

in a filling station parking lot
i smashed my phone, i lost the plot
and still the alarm at six o'clock
and it doesn't stop
and it doesn't stop

i never became who i wanted to be
this city's no good for a girl like me
the lights go down and you're on your own
the lights go up and you're no one again
no one again

this world ain't a place for dreams
not for people like you and me
Track Name: Since We Landed
it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
though the cab is the color of the sun
i'm in the back with a bag on my lap
and he called shotgun
and the lights are sailing down the boulevard
and washing up on the shores of some hotel
where the bed is made, the bible's in the drawer
clean towels and sheets on the top shelf
the sky is slipping open as the lot becomes a lake
a yawn fogs up the window as the driver taps the brakes

it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
interpret any way that you please
i'm dangling like pearls from the arm of the chair
he's on the floor with his chin pressed to his knees
and his skin is the color of powder
and we ain't movin', so we must be sitting still
there's a dull grey light dripping down the walls
dead fireflies in jars on the windowsill
the room is getting smaller with every breath that we take
i'm suddenly despising him, i'm slamming on the brakes

and hydroplaning

it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
and you know when it rains it pours
i'm leaning toward the light so it'll catch my face just right
he's just watching his shoes dry on the floor
and he has to get up to get a drink
to make a call, to laugh real loud
to sit back down on the other side of the room
to concentrate real hard on the TV now
i'm lying on the blanket, he doesn't know i'm still awake
to say goodnight is to admit a mistake
so i listen to the wind, every move that he makes
Track Name: Scarlet Four O'Clock
four o'clock and the sun is shocked
against the sides of the buildings
and the shielded faces of the crowds
the tracks along the highlands
a train conductor with tiny hands
and miles of fences caked in rust and cloud
and me here at a door
that i've knocked upon before
although every time i swear will be the last

i wonder who would think to name a flower
scarlet four o'clock
although i can't say i've ever seen one
and who'd have thought i'd stoop so low
in the sweet and fevered glow
the sinking sun of scarlet --

four o'clock and the room is dark
except the clock on the table
though the sun will soon slip around the shade
the beggars on the corner
the business commuters
are not quite yet awake
nor is the train that rings through the hall
rattles the frames on the wall
shakes the bed, disturbs your head
as it hurries by

and who would think to name a flower
scarlet four o'clock
although i can't say i've ever seen one
and who'd have thought i'd stoop so low
in the sweet and fevered glow
the sleeping sun of
scarlet four o'clock
Track Name: Batman & Robin
you know i always dreamed that it would be like this
a story you and i would write and seal with a kiss
while everyone in town gathered all around to see
now the doves have flown, the guests gone home
darling, drop your mask, we're all alone
your secret is safe with me

it gets lonesome in the tower
it gets lonesome in the cave
darling, you're my superpower
darling, you're my daring escape

i just knew from the moment that i saw you
the moment that i saw you i just knew

the wreckage of a battle on the bedroom floor
cardboard castles all in tatters, a kingdom no more
how easy swept away, rebuilt for one more day, one more fight
with the nightlight and the shining moon
the shouting in the other room
will we sleep through the night

it gets lonesome in the tower
it gets lonesome in the cave
darling, you're my superpower
darling, you're my daring escape

i just knew from the moment that i saw you
the moment that i saw you i just knew

i just knew
