lyrics

it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
though the cab is the color of the sun
i'm in the back with a bag on my lap
and he called shotgun
and the lights are sailing down the boulevard
and washing up on the shores of some hotel
where the bed is made, the bible's in the drawer
clean towels and sheets on the top shelf
the sky is slipping open as the lot becomes a lake
a yawn fogs up the window as the driver taps the brakes

it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
interpret any way that you please
i'm dangling like pearls from the arm of the chair
he's on the floor with his chin pressed to his knees
and his skin is the color of powder
and we ain't movin', so we must be sitting still
there's a dull grey light dripping down the walls
dead fireflies in jars on the windowsill
the room is getting smaller with every breath that we take
i'm suddenly despising him, i'm slamming on the brakes

and hydroplaning

it hasn't stopped raining since we landed
and you know when it rains it pours
i'm leaning toward the light so it'll catch my face just right
he's just watching his shoes dry on the floor
and he has to get up to get a drink
to make a call, to laugh real loud
to sit back down on the other side of the room
to concentrate real hard on the TV now
i'm lying on the blanket, he doesn't know i'm still awake
to say goodnight is to admit a mistake
so i listen to the wind, every move that he makes

about

Matthew Connor Boston, Massachusetts

Matthew Connor is a crooner for the 21st century, writing heart-wrenching songs that combine the windswept ideals of classic American balladry with stark depictions of modern-day alienation. The Boston-based Connor has a haunting voice that conjures ghosts of past heartbreaks, and he pairs it with spectral guitars that recall country tearjerkers and alt-pop brooding.
